97. Webinar on KNOW YOUR TEENS using BRIDGE MODEL (Part-2) | by Bhanumathi
Adolescence is not merely a difficult phase; it is a profound neurological and emotional transition from childhood to adulthood. In this insightful 97th masterclass—and the continuation of the Know Your Teens series—Psychotherapist and Ex-Banker Ms. Bhanumathi Das Sharma explores advanced strategies for parenting teenagers using the comprehensive BRIDGE Model. This session addresses common parental categories (proactive, reactive, and crisis parents), emphasizes that teenagers are experiencing internal struggles rather than intentionally giving parents a hard time, and breaks down the 3 C's of Connection (Connection, Compassion, Coaching) and the six-part BRIDGE Framework to foster emotional safety and open communication.
🧠 Part 1: Teen Types of Parents aur 3-Cs Matrix
[10:30] — The Three Categories of Parents: Adolescence transition me teen tarah ke parents samne aate hain:
Proactive Parents: Jinke bache abhi is age me kadam rakh rahe hain aur wo safety guidelines dhoondhte hain.
Reactive Parents: Jinke bachon me thode-bohot behavioral issues dekhna shuru ho gaye hain.
Crisis Parents: Jo bache ke badhte distance aur heavy boundary violations ke chakkar me bilkul helpless hain.
[11:59] — Teens are Having a Hard Time: Maa-baap sochte hain ki bache unhe hard time de rahe hain, lekin unka struggle ek indication hai ki unhe aapke support ki zaroorat hai. Sasti dictatorship (Top-Down Approach) yahan kaam nahi karegi.
[16:09] — The Core Framework of 3-Cs: Connection, Compassion (Empathy), aur Coaching—ye teen pillars bachon ko barbad hone se bacha sakte hain.
📋 Part 2: The Four S Model aur The Toxic Advice Filter
[16:48] — Dr. Dan Siegel's Four S of Attachment: Bache apne parents me ye chaar cheezein dhoondhte hain:
Safe: Kya wo ghar me physically aur emotionally safe feel karte hain?
Seen: Do they feel understood? Kya unki mental state ko bserve kiya ja raha hai?
Soothe [18:14]: Jab unka mood kharab ho, to kya aap bina unhe force kiye unhe shant (calm) kar sakte hain?
Secure [18:59]: Is your presence predictable for them?
[22:06] — The "Thought Bubble" Technique: Gusse me bachon ko sasta gyan ya moral lecture dene ka man sabka karta hai (Jaise pocket money jaldi khane par bolna—"You blew all the money, budget seekho" [22:42]). Is trap se bachne ke liye apne dimage me ek Thought Bubble banayein aur saari negative advice aur moral policing usme daal dein. Don't open your mouth.
[24:40] — They Prefer Friends over Parents: Teens aapka bंडल-bंडल gyan nahi sunna chahte. Wo apne friends se seekhna pasand karte hain aur wahi galtiyan repeat karte hain. Agar aap unhe green dress bolenge, to wo jaanबूझ kar red pehnenge [25:07], taaki unhe aapki baat na man'ne ka pleasure mil sake.
🛡️ Part 3: Coaching with Permission aur The Underline Goal
[25:54] — Unsolved Problems & Lagging Skills: Dr. Ross Greene ke anusar, bache jab achi tarah behave nahi karte, to uska kaaran unka kharab nature nahi balki unki Lagging Skills hain. Unka logical owl brain abhi fully develop nahi hua hai.
[27:44] — Coaching with Permission Mode: Bachon se sawal poochte waqt unhe as an adult respect dein aur permission lein. Jaise—"Can I ask you about your pocket money?" ya "Can I ask you about your phone game?" [29:28]. Agar wo "NO" bole, to gussa hone ke bajaye kahein—"Okay, tell me when you change your mind, I am available." [28:52].
[30:16] — The Curious Observation Principle: Agar aapne bete ko kisi ladki ke sath ghumte dekha, to direct mat pucho—"Who was that?" Kahein—"I saw you with someone, can I talk to you about it when you are comfortable?" [30:24]. Unke 'NO' ko respect dena hi unka trust jeetna hai. Kabhi bhi 'WHY' (kyun) mat pucho, hamesha 'WHAT' ya 'HOW' se dialouge open kijiye.
[34:50] — They are NOT Your Project: Apne bachon ko fixed karne ka ek mathematical project mat samjhie. Unhe 60 saal ki umar tak apne aepron string me bandh kar Mamma's Boy mat banayein [37:07]. Unhe aatm-nirbharta aur critical thinking seekhne dein.
💡 Part 4: THE BRIDGE MODEL (The Main Course Framework)
[38:03] — B - Brain and Behavior: Tineagers me monkey brain (amygdala) aur owl brain (wise brain) ke beech ka synchronization break hota hai jise "Flipping the lid" kehte hain. Unhe biology samjhaie taaki unka cognitive function improve ho sake.
[41:16] — R - Relationship Building (The 5:1 Gottman Ratio): Dr. John Gottman ke anusar, life me 1 negative interaction ko balance karne ke liye 5 positive interactions hone zaroori hain. Bachon ke sath WE-TIME (family meals, board games, picnicing) set kijiye. Teens Touch Deprived hote hain, isliye playfully unhe aakar ek bare hug dein ya unke hair ruffel kar dein [44:45].
[46:25] — I - Interaction Outside the Moment: Jab bacha gusse me ho, tab usse baat mat kijiye (Never thrash it out in the moment). Jab uska dimage shant ho jaye, tab use purani baat par lekar aaiye (Circeling Back Around) [49:12].
[53:26] — G - Growth & Self-Care for Parents: Dan Siegel ke anusar, bache ki mental stability is baat par depend karti hai ki uske parents kitne self-aware hain (Parent's Self-Understanding). Parents ko khud bhi sleep cycle aur me-time par focus karna chahiye.
[56:29] — E - Extra Support for Hot Topics: Agar bacha Self-Harm (khud ko nuksan pahunchana) [01:07:40], substance abuse, internet addiction, ya severe depression me hai, to use ghar ke andar chhupane (under the carpet) ke bajaye immeditely ek licensed psychiatrist ya psychotherapist ke paas lekar jayein.
[57:38] — The NDA Government Analogy for Sparouse: Parenting me hamesha pati-patni ko ek team bankar kaam karna chahiye. Apne personal disputes bed-room me rakhein, aur bachon ke samne ek joint alliance (Jaise NDA government) bankar behave karein [52:38], nahi to bache bohot jaldi manipulative ho jaate hain.
Parents & Joint Family Caregivers: Jo log teenagers ki mobile isolation, relationship concealment (secrets), aur intense mood swings se pareshan hain.
School Teachers, Counselors & Child Psychologists: Jo log attachment theory, Gottman conditioning matrix, aur systematic behavioral corrections ko seekhna chahte hain.
Young Couples & Scholars: Jo log modern developmental psychology aur parents-child boundary setups ke clinical frameworks ko map karna chahte hain.
